A maternity session involves the professional photography of a mother, her spouse, and of course, the baby bump. There is a great deal that goes into perfecting a maternity scene, both on and off camera. The critical consensus amongst maternity photographers is that shooting is best when the mother is between 32-36 weeks.
Off camera, setting the picture stage requires an experienced set designer and decorator who understands what aesthetic the client wants to show off in their collection. The location and time of arrival must be set in advance, so as to capture the exact lighting, emotion, and feeling desired by the client. Moreover, the right wardrobe and accessory choice for the mother is imperative, incorporating flower crowns, beads, minimalist jewelry, and other items which show off the elegance and joy of pregnancy.
On camera, the photographer will work with the client’s body type and features to strike the right pose, both alone and in communion with their partner. Direction is key here, and the right photographer will also know how to execute her shots with key creative direction.
